CONSULTING IN THE TRAUMA FIELD
In 2004, radio station 3RRR interviewed Dr Firestone on the topic of trauma - what it means, responses to trauma and how best to assist people who have suffered trauma in their lives. He continues to work with refugees and asyum seekers, as a consultant psychiatrist for the Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture and Trauma.
In early 2005, Harlinah Hamer provided information, strategies and advice about dealing with trauma and post traumatic stress disorder to NGOs in Indonesia and India who were working with communities in those countries who had suffered from the tsunami devastation. Late in 2005 she was interviewed on 3CR (community radio) about post traumatic stress disorder, the differing impacts of trauma on different people, coping mechanisms, working on mental health issues in a cross-cultural environment, and the methodology used in our Timor project of family storytelling group therapy. She is currently coordinating a counselling program at the Alfred Hospital, which provides clinical assistance through community workers for people from CALD (Culturally and Linguistically Diverse) backgrounds who have HIV.
